Cost code settings
In Sage Construction Management, cost codes represent the type of work, such as concrete, framing, electrical, or painting. Cost codes do not need to include a resource identifier, such as Materials (M), Labor (L), Equipment (E), Sub (S), or Other (O), because Sage Construction Management tracks expenses by resource type. For example, labor timecards are categorized as L and subcontracts as S by default.
Recommended format example:
- Code: 03 11 00
- Description: Concrete Forming
In the construction industry, code terminology can vary by department.
Estimating team
Estimates are easier to organize and understand when broken into smaller sections. These sections are called cost codes and are sometimes referred to as the work breakdown structure (WBS). In Sage Construction Management, cost codes can include optional internal grouping codes similar to the job cost code table for projects. This flexibility supports different grouping and summarization needs.
Project management team
Sage Construction Management uses job cost codes to track financial details such as purchase order items, change order items, timecards, and progress invoices. These codes are project specific and are created in the Contract Administration section of a project. Job cost codes can also include optional internal grouping codes that help summarize financial data in project analytics.
Accounting team
In most construction firms, service items are configured in the accounting system to mirror job cost codes. Each service item is linked to general ledger expense and income accounts so it can be referenced on accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
Job cost codes in Sage Construction Management categorise the type of work and are project specific. When integrated with an accounting system such as Intuit QuickBooks, these codes are either mapped one to one with service items or grouped so that multiple cost codes map to a single service item.
